Patience: in the age of Insta-everything


General questions to open up the topic:
1.       How much social media do you use?
a.       Would you select fast food over a slow restaurant?
b.      How fast do you scroll down?
2.       When was the last time you had to be patient?
3.       Do you find it hard to wait for something?
a.       Would you select the shortest line or wait in yours?
b.      Do you press the close button when in a lift or wait for it to automatically close?
c.       Watch an action packed movie or a slow “boring” one to the end?
d.      When you open doors, do you go in or let others pass first?
e.      What is your feeling when pages load slowly/slow internet?
f.        Do you have a feeling that you need the fastest broadband?
4.       When you are typing something do you take time to process what is written before hastily sending it?
5.       What would you rate your ability to make patient choices from 1-10?
a.       How patient would you rate yourself? From a scale of 1-3
6.       What is the last book you read?
a.       How long can you sit down and read?
b.      Would you rather watch a youtube synopsis?
c.       How many tabs do you open in the browser?
7.       Could you be patient with another person?
a.       Who is the one person you are least patient with?
b.      Who do you think has shown you the most patience in life?
8.       Have you heard of delayed gratification?
a.       Definition. Delayed gratification refers to the ability to put off something mildly fun or pleasurable now, in order to gain something that is more fun, pleasurable, or rewarding later. For example, you could watch TV the night before an exam, or you could practice delayed gratification and study for the exam.

1.       What do you think of patience as something that can be chosen?
a.       Are some people born naturally short tempered?
b.      Is it a nature or nurture thing?
2.       The Bible talks about one of the fruit of the Spirit being patience or forbearing/long suffering what do you think about God helping a person to be patient?

How it leads back to Jesus
1.       Jesus showed patience leading up to this death, he was flogged, humiliated and forced to carry His cross, His own instrument of execution. He could have called down an army of angels to save Him at any point, but didn’t. Do you think that you would ever be as patient as Him? Do you want to be a more patient person? DO you believe that God can help you to be more patient?
